Kaamos is the annual period during which the sun does not rise above the horizon. The phenomenon occurs at the Earth's polar circles and higher latitudes. The closer you get to the poles, the earlier the darkness starts and the longer the darkness is.

Kaamos is often thought of as a dreary and gloomy time, when you are tired and your energy level is constantly low. Snow and cold are also perceived as unpleasant.

I myself only learned at an older age and through photography to find absolutely great experiences from that period. Kaamos' tonal world is in a class of its own; not only the reddish kajo in the southern sky and the blue moment of midday, but the entire pastel-hued delicate color spectrum that at midday reflects in the snowy trees.

The blue moment in the picture was taken from the slope of the fell. A man, a woman and a small dog are walking below. Many hikers in Lapland have fallen in love with the mysterious tonal world of kaamos and the silence of the fell landscape.

One can only imagine how a different world opens up for a person who lived in a big city during his age with a fell hike in the quiet forest of Lapland.

The picture never tells the whole truth about that atmosphere, when the color palette of the sky slowly becomes deeper. In the end, only a disappearing red line is left of the brown on the horizon. In the words of Eino Leino: "Ice red-striped, powerless longing for beauty".
