At the beginning of the last century, the whooper swan was quite endangered, until Yrjö Koko's tireless educational work on behalf of the bird brought about the peace of the swan, and the population has grown from a couple of ten pairs of swans in the 1940s to more than ten thousand.

The swan is a migratory bird, but in recent years it has started wintering in Lapland. The bird can withstand the cold very well and it is enough for it to have a thaw in the river or pond so that it can dive for food from the bottom. You can often see swans diving with only their tails on the surface of the water.

The whooper swan is a beautiful bird and its white color is probably one of the reasons why it has been chosen as Finland's national bird. Swans mate at a young age and usually form a lifelong union.

These gallant birds have been my subject of photography since the beginning. Also for the reason that they are easy to photograph and I get inspired every time I see them. The swans in the picture blend in well with the snowy, frosty day and the fells in the background.

Laulujoutsen is a part of Lapland and Lapland. And one of the signs of spring is a pair of whooper swans looking for a nest site and flying in formation looking for it.
